sto      The first people arrived in Kentucky  at the end of the last ice age. Their arrival was between 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. They may have traveled over a land bridge connecting Siberia to Alaska. When people first arrived,  they were together in one spot of the state. Over time they spread out in all parts of the state or continent of North America.

When the first people arrived , Kentucky was very cold. The state was home to mammoths as tall as fourteen  feet (4.3 meters) tall, sloths as big as an ox, and giant bison. The first people hunted these gigantic animals for food. As well as being the first people, they were also the first tribe. They were called the Paleo Indians. Paleo meant ancient. The people in this tribe were the first people in Kentucky, as well as North America. These people came from Asia.

The first people ate mammoths, bison, and oxen. They also used these animals for fur and hides. They made their spears out of a type of rock called chert. The nes were designed to detach from the wood so they would not have to get close to the animal that they were hunting. The paleo Indians also known as the first people in Kentucky always hunted in groups. The tribe was also nomadic. They rarely ever stayed in one place.

Explorers and Settlers

The First Non-Native Americans to discover Kentucky were the

explorers  Jacques Marquette, Canidian Louis Jolliet, Thomas Walker, John Finley, Daniel Boone, and James Harrod. These explorers explored  parts of Kentucky and Virginia. Most non-Native American explorers were from Europe. They came to the state because they were very interested in Kentucky and they wanted to settle land. These explorers came to Kentucky beginning in sixteen seventy- three. The results of their expeditions were dividing Kentucky and Virginia.

The first people to settle Kentucky were the Longhunters. These settlers came in the seventeen hundreds. They came from Virginia and other English colonies. The Longhunters settled in The Appalachian Mountains, the southeastern corner of Kentucky, and the Southwestern corner.
