Kentucky is a rather small state with an average sized population. The state of Kentucky is located in the southeast region of the United States. Some of the bordering states are Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, Missouri, and Virginia. Kentucky covers 40,409 square miles ranking it thirty-seventh in size compared to other states. About 4,339,367 people live in Kentucky. The state is ranked twenty-sixth among other states in population. The capital of Kentucky is Frankfort. Frankfort is located in the northern region of the state. About 25,527 people live in Frankfort. Two other major cities in Kentucky are Lexington and Louisville. Louisville is located in the northwest region, Lexington is located slightly to the west of the middle of the state. About 1,235,708 people live in Louisville and about 295,803 people live in Lexington.

The climate in Kentucky is very diverse throughout the seasons. For example, the highest temperature ever recorded was 114 Fahrenheit, and the lowest temperature ever recorded was negative thirty-seven Fahrenheit. Land Regions

     The first region is called the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. The mines in this region produce most of Kentucky’s coal. Producing one-quarter of Kentucky's coal is the Western Kentucky Coal Field. The region also contains the highest peak in Kentucky which is called Black Mountain. Most of the region is covered by the Appalachian Mountains. Most of the region is covered by the Appalachian Mountains.  The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field is filled with deep gorges, cliffs, and many rivers including the Cumberland and Kentucky Rivers.

       Another region is called the Pennyroyal.This region is the the largest region in the whole state. The region got its name from a type of mint that grows throughout the state. Many underground chambers and passages can be found throughout this region. People often explore these chambers and passages. The Pennyroyal Region extends as far as the Ohio River.

       The Western Kentucky Coal Field is another one of Kentucky's regions. This region is part of the United States Interior Coal Field. The coal mines in this region produce about one-quarter of Kentucky’s coal. This region is one of Kentucky’s prime farming areas producing many crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and other crops. Hogs and beef cattle are among the livestock that are raised in these farms.

               The fifth and final region of Kentucky is called the Jackson Purchase Region.This region was part of a tract  purchased by Andrew Jackson.Even though this region is the smallest in size the soil is very fertile and the land is very good for farming. A lot of wetlands are located in this region.

Landforms

                 Kentucky is a state with many mountains. They are the Appalachian Mountains, Cumberland Mountains, Clack Mountain, and the Pine Mountains. The highest elevation is Black Mountain reaching 4,145 feet high or 1,263 meters. Black Mountain is located in Harlan County in the mid-eastern region within the Appalachian Mountains. Many roads lead up to the mountain range. There are many steep drop-offs and rock walls within Black Mountain. This mountain range may hold the most profitable energy resources of any mountain range or state. To hike on the Black Mountain summit, one must have a waiver. The best season to hike on Black Mountain is winter: particularly January or December.
